Turning crew insight into measurable improvement.

What happens when the people who know an offshore rig best are given a structured way to identify energy-saving opportunities, and operational data is used to quantify the impact?

On the Deepsea Mira, Northern Ocean Ltd., Odfjell Drilling and Stepwise put that idea into practice through SmartSaver, a six-week, crew-led energy efficiency initiative.

Each week, the crew focused on a different area of everyday operations, from idle equipment and compressed air to HVAC, lifting, lighting and accommodation, identifying opportunities that could then be quantified and followed through. Over the six weeks, the crew generated 115 observations, from simple behavioural changes to significant operational improvements. Importantly, observations continued beyond the weekly reporting cycle, showing the crew's attention to energy saving did not stop when the formal reporting did.

The Topside 690V switchboard provided a strong directional signal: average power demand after launch was 178 kW lower than the pre-launch average, with the reduction holding through the campaign period. In total, the crew's implemented actions translate to 628.9 cubic metres of fuel and roughly 1,700 tonnes of CO2 equivalent saved annually, worth close to USD 0.7 million a year. SmartSaver also identified a further USD 0.58 million in potential savings, ready to be captured going forward.

“Analysing and visualising the impact of simple operational changes helps the crew see how their actions translate into measurable fuel, cost and emissions savings.”

Torje Midtsæter, Odfjell Drilling

That is the idea behind SmartSaver: connect crew knowledge with operational data on the Stepwise platform, turning day-to-day insight into a measurable estimate of fuel, cost and emissions impact. That link between crew observation and quantified potential is what moved SmartSaver beyond a standard awareness campaign.

A big thank you to the Deepsea Mira crew, Odfjell Drilling and Northern Ocean for the engagement and collaboration. The bigger outcome was behavioural: energy efficiency became something the crew actively looked for, not simply something measured afterwards.
