SmartSaver: crew-led energy reduction, built into the operation

What it is

SmartSaver is Stepwise's crew-led energy reduction programme. Where Applied Analytics independently validates a technology's performance, SmartSaver runs inside the operation itself — a structured weekly rhythm that turns crew observations into logged, reviewed, and repeatable actions. Each week, a focus area is set against a specific operational system, briefed to the crew, and owned by cross-departmental teams. Actions are logged, reviewed, and carried forward, so engagement compounds instead of resetting every campaign.

SmartSaver runs entirely on existing crew and equipment — no capex, no new hardware, no integration project.

What you get

SmartSaver turns crew awareness into a structured programme, not a one-off campaign.

  • A structured weekly focus cycle — the operations team selects a focus area, it's briefed at handovers and toolbox talks, and cross-departmental "Pods" take ownership with a nominated SmartSaver rep — to promote, remind, and record
  • Logged, reviewable actions — observation cards capture what the crew changed, not just what they noticed, feeding a weekly wrap-up review rather than disappearing into informal conversation
  • A rhythm built to sustain engagement — scoreboards, recognition, and rewards keep participation live week over week, rather than front-loading effort into a single awareness push
  • Focus areas grounded in operational basis, not guesswork — such as, idle equipment, compressed air, HVAC, cranes, lighting, and galley/accommodation systems each carry their own stated savings range and rationale, not a single blanket number
  • Outcomes measured the same way as the rest of the platform — against a stated baseline, reported as a range with its basis attached, and separated from modelled upside that hasn't been delivered yet

Who it’s for

Offshore operators and drilling contractors running multi-well or multi-month campaigns who want crew engagement to produce a structured, repeatable programme with logged outcomes — not a one-off awareness campaign that fades after week one.

How it works

A five-step weekly cycle, run by the crew and repeated for the life of the campaign:
  1. Select focus area — the operations team picks a weekly focus tied to a specific system (e.g. idle equipment, HVAC, crane use), grounded in where the operational basis shows the clearest potential
  2. Crew briefing — the focus is shared at handovers and toolbox talks, with a plain-language example of what the target looks like in practice
  3. Departmental ownership — cross-functional "Pods" (e.g. Drilling, Marine, Tech) each assign a SmartSaver rep to promote the focus, remind the crew, and record actions taken
  4. Weekly wrap-up — actions and savings are reviewed in the next session; successful practices and crew suggestions are logged to shape the following week's focus
  5. Reward & repeat — the best-performing pod is recognised on a crewroom scoreboard, with the cycle repeating on a new focus area the following week

Anasuria, Helix and Exceed: proving that crew engagement drives measurable savings

Reference case

Over a 13-day SmartSaver campaign on the Anasuria field (operated by Anasuria Operating Company, with Helix Energy Solutions and Exceed Energy), daily fuel intensity fell 22.3% against the prior-year baseline — from 18.78 m³ to 14.59 m³ per day. That translates to $1.7M in annualised fuel cost savings, benchmarked at $1,000/m³ for marine gas oil, and 4,690 tCO2e avoided annually at the measured reduction rate.

The campaign logged 36 SmartSaver ideas across six crew departments, and identified a further 8–10% reduction potential through future energy reduction initiatives — modelled upside, not yet delivered, and reported separately from the measured result above.

Key figures

Measured results from a disciplined, data-driven campaign.

Over the 13-day programme on the Anasuria field, disciplined collaboration and shared data proved they could move the numbers on their own — no new equipment, no added technology, just structured crew-led action layered onto the existing operation. Safety and transparency held throughout, and the result was proof rather than projection: a short, focused intervention that showed measurable gains and crew engagement can scale together, not trade off against each other.

Fuel cost and CO2 savings are annualised. * Performance metrics exclude Non-Productive Time (NPT) and Waiting on Weather (WOW) to ensure results reflect controllable operational efficiency. All totals and averages are calculated over the active operational phase only, following the Stepwise continuous improvement methodology. ** Total savings potential includes both implemented and recommended energy reduction initiatives annualised.*** The operator was not exposed to a CO2 tax, as the campaign was conducted on the UK Continental Shelf under the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (UK ETS). A $100 per CO2te benchmark is applied for reference, reflecting typical market values in major trading systems. Cost benchmarks: Fuel cost saved calculated using $1,000 per m³ for marine fuel.

Total rig fuel cost per wellbore in USD (Planned vs Actual)
Across the five-well campaign, total planned fuel costs were $11.2 million compared to an actual spend of $10.19 million, a saving of approximately $1 million, representing a 9% improvement in overall fuel efficiency and a clear demonstration of measurable well economics in action. Where overrun occured, significant WOW was accountable.

Why the number holds up

The result was measured against a stated prior-year baseline over the active operational phase, with the fuel-cost benchmark and calculation basis disclosed alongside it — not a single-point promise dressed up as fact.

The 8–10% future energy-reduction-initiative figure is kept separate and explicitly flagged as modelled potential, not counted into the delivered result: exactly the standard the rest of the site's numbers are held to.
