Serica/Dana – COSL Innovator: Delivering Measurable Savings Through Well Economics

2nd Oct 2025

This five-well drilling campaign across the Triton, Gannet E, Guillemot, Evelyn, and Belinda fields set a new benchmark for low-carbon, high-performance drilling in the UKCS. Delivered 27 days ahead of plan, the project demonstrated how Stepwise-enabled collaboration, live emissions monitoring, and data-driven decision-making can deliver measurable well economics while strengthening ESG credentials.

The challenge

Balancing cost, efficiency, and compliance in a complex campaign

Operators face mounting pressure to reduce emissions, cut rig time, and meet investor and regulatory expectations without compromising well delivery. For Serica and Dana, the challenge was to deliver a multi-well campaign that balanced economic performance with decarbonisation, while ensuring transparency and compliance with North Sea Transition Authority stewardship expectations.

The approach

Embedding collaboration, transparency, and efficiency into operations

Stepwise was integrated into both rig and vessel reporting, enabling real-time emissions tracking and operational insights. Daily reporting, regular cross-company alignment, and well-by-well benchmarking ensured all partners — Serica, Dana, Petrofac, and COSL — worked from a single, transparent dataset. This “One-Team” model allowed for proactive energy management, identification of fuel-saving opportunities, and systematic implementation of Emission Reduction Initiatives (ERIs).

The result

Delivering measurable savings and setting a new benchmark

The campaign achieved a 42% reduction in CO₂ intensity (from 3.98 Te/m to 2.3 Te/m) and saved 4,560 tonnes of CO₂. Fuel savings exceeded $1.0 million, equivalent to 8.7% of total fuel spend, while operational efficiency improved by 30%. Crucially, the campaign was delivered 27 days ahead of plan, avoiding further rig-day costs and demonstrating clear ROI. In fact, the savings achieved outweighed the cost of engaging Stepwise, making the service effectively self-financing and delivering an ROI of more than 4x.

ROI

The campaign demonstrated that efficiency pays for itself.

The cost of engaging Stepwise is clearly out weighed by the savings generated through the implementation of Emission Reduction Initiatives (ERIs). By identifying and enabling operational efficiencies, Stepwise not only supports emissions reductions but also delivers measurable cost savings, making the service effectively self-financing overtime.
